POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Applications are invited for a tenure track position at the Assistant
Professor level in Mechanical Engineering beginning fall 2002 in the
area of thermal sciences. The ME department currently has eight tenured
or tenure-track professors and eight lecturers, most of whom are actively
involved in research. The faculty has been successful in attracting
sizeable grants from the NSF, NASA, DOE, the Whitaker Foundation,
and through local industries. Some of the research areas in which
the faculty are currently involved include smart materials, microgravity
combustion, powder materials processing, hybrid vehicle development,
electronics packaging, energy efficiency and biomaterials/bioengineering.
SDSU has a joint doctoral program with UCSD. The ME department currently
has about two hundred undergraduate, sixty Master's, and five Ph.D.
students.
The candidate should have an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering
and have a strong interest in teaching a full range of undergraduate
and graduate courses in the thermodynamics and heat transfer areas,
as well as, in developing a funded research program with government

city. Redevelopment of the university neighborhood is currently underway.
An underground trolley station is being built to connect SDSU with the
urban transportation network. The San Diego area is highly diversified
in technological pursuits with strong bioengineering, telecommunications,
and advanced defense sectors. Local industries that are within a short
